You’re a Mac user. And you’ve tried to open a file be it a Word document or a text file or an email or a video file or a song whatever you want to open, it opens in an application that you don’t really want to open in.

For example, I could open a Word document and it opens in pages and not Microsoft Word which is installed on my Mac as well you may open a JPEG picture and you usually want JPEG pictures to be opened with Photoshop at their opening in preview so this is how you can set the system default or the default application for each file extension.

There are two methods by virtue of which you can change the default opening browser, one is a temporary method and another method is permanent.

  1. Temporary Method:

By saying a temporary method I want to mean this method works for a single method and the steps are mention below…..

  • First, do a normal click on the file
  • And then go for a right-click, a popup menu will come
  • Hit on “Open with” and another popup will appear on your screen with a different application on which the file extension can open
  • Finally, select the application you like.
  1. Permanent Method:

And the permanent method means, once you do this setting, a particular extension will always open in that application and the steps are mention below…..

  • First, do a normal click on the file extension
  • The go-to the top left corner of your pc and select “File”
  • Go to “Get info” and hit
  • Drag down your mouse and hit on “Open with” a selection bar appears just below with an up and down arrow at the right end
  • Select the application you would like to a particular file extension
  • And then hit on “Change all” on the same popup
  • Finally, an alert message appears and hit on “Continue”

And your default open application is changed permanently for the same file extension.
